House on a Hill,
Unknown type in Box & Colerne
Completed: 2020
Architect: ARTEL31
About this home:
This hillside house above Bath is special for its seamless integration with the landscape and breath taking views of the historic city. Designed to blend into its surroundings, the lower ground floor is built from oolitic limestone — native to the site and famously used throughout Bath —while the upper floor uses ebonised timber to reflect the nearby woodland. An inverted layout places bedrooms in a sheltered lower level, while living spaces and the master suite capture panoramic valley views. A striking grey brick chimney adds verticality, anchoring the home's horizontal lines and drawing the eye skyward above the trees. The design thoughtfully balances visibility, materiality, and topography.

Project Challenges
Geotechnical challenges
Sited on a notoriously unstable hillside above Bath early invasive studies allowed us to ensure the long term success of the proposed house.
North Facing Orientation
Despite having some incredible views solar gain and daylight factors were explored heavily to ensure a high quality of internal environment.
Very Tight Access Driveway
Construction methodologies formed a key part of the early design process and landscaping was designed to minimise the need for removal of spoil as well as creating a raft of biodiversity measures.
