About this home:

What makes this community building so special is that it provides a permanent, purpose-built home for CommUNITY Little Hulton—a flexible space tailored to their specific needs. It enables them to keep investing in the lives of local young people, while expanding their services now and into the future. But more than that, it was built with the community. Through a process of co-construction, local residents helped assemble the building themselves—empowering them, creating emotional ownership, and delivering lasting social value. The build opened the door to genuine community involvement and a deep connection between people and place.

Planning Insights:

9 months at planning

Planning tackled key local issues, including antisocial behaviour and security. The building was designed with robust materials, minimal vulnerable surfaces, and clear sightlines to reduce vandalism and ensure safety. Bringing activity to a disused part of Peel Park, the scheme also addressed challenges around access, parking, and drop-off, with level thresholds and designated bays ensuring the centre is inclusive and welcoming.

Project Challenges

Wrapping a derelict building in WikiHouse

The design wrapped a new WikiHouse shell around an old, derelict building. Careful detailing ensured structural integration, weatherproofing, and thermal performance across old and new elements.

Prototype pushing WikiHouse size limits

As a prototype, the design pushed WikiHouse to new limits in size and scale. Collaborative working with engineers and iterative testing ensure the structure remained safe, efficient, and buildable.

Co-construction involving young children

To allow for safe involvement, the contractor set up designated build zones and separate welfare areas. With supervision and clear roles, even local children could contribute meaningfully and safely.
