Multi House Self Build in Randwick, Whiteshill and Ruscombe

completed: 2018

About this home:

The Old Bakehouse is accessed via an unclassified lane and gently slopes southeast, offering views toward Stroud and Selsley. The surrounding area features a mix of houses, roads, and pathways interspersed with hedges, grass banks, and Cotswold stone walls. The buildings incorporate a variety of materials, including Cotswold stone, render, timber, and brick, with gabled roofs and retaining walls common throughout the area. The site was just outside the Randwick conservation area - and as it has been so well received by the planners is now being incorporated into the Conservation Area.

Planning Insights:

12 months at planning

Kevin had been looking for land around Stroud, Gloucestershire, for a decade - “plots here are so scarce" Kevin project-managed the 18-month build of the Cotswold stone and cedar. "Every-one who comes by says how well they fit in," he says. "We could tweak the inside to how we wanted it." With 10ft ceilings, the living room is "a lovely big open area we'd never have been able to have before". The two houses were valued at the 20% more than he’d spent.

Project Challenges

Scale & Character

Houses are designed to blend into the landscape, with a strong emphasis on Cotswold stone. Single-storey wings help maintain existing views and mitigate visual impact.

Layout & Orientation

Houses are positioned to maximise valley views while protecting neighbours' privacy. Use of minimal glazing on neighbour-facing walls while incorporating screening features where necessary.

Landscaping

Native hedging and planting will maintain privacy and blend with the village character. Most existing trees will remain, with only minor removals for access.
