About this home:

Millar + Howard Workshop wanted to design a structure that was distinct from the trees yet complimented their form, textures and patterns, a building that differed from a typical treehouse. The design plays with the cantilevering of boxes that are elevated and offset between the protected trees on the site. The house also boasts a lightweight veranda that circulates around the home and projects into the tree canopy: an unusual treehouse escape hidden in the middle of a bustling town.

Planning Insights:

6 months at planning

Two previous planning attempts were made by previous architects that failed due to harmful effects on the listed garden and TPO trees. An innovative solution of steel screw piles was developed to protect the tree roots and the house was sensitivley nestled amongst the trees. Planning was eventually granted at committee after persuading committee members that overshading would not be an issue.

Project Challenges

A small, densely wooded plot with 27 protected trees on it

The trees posed a big constraint and dictated the location of the building within the site.

Achieving Passivhaus standard on an unusual site

Passivhaus status is difficult for unconventionally shaped and proportioned buildings but the clients were determined to achieve it.

Two previous applications for houses had been declined

Conventional dwellings would not pass planning, a different approach was needed.
