Multi House Self Build in Chalford

completed: 2016

Architect: Millar + Howard Workshop

About this home:

An early project for LIVEDIN where we were able to demonstrate that with Self Build we could achieve gentle densification within a settlement boundary while respecting the existing character of the area. By utilising vernacular materials such as Cotswold stone, timber cladding, and traditional roof tiles, the project seamlessly integrates with its surroundings, reinforcing local architectural identity. The carefully considered design adaptations, informed by community feedback, highlight how small-scale infill development can provide additional housing without disrupting the landscape or neighbourhood fabric. This approach balances modern living needs with heritage sensitivity, offering a replicable strategy for incremental growth.

Planning Insights:

6 months at planning

We held a Community Consultation in 2014 on a drop-in basis for a denser scheme. The community feedback was generally positive. While each individual neighbour raised concerns about how the proposals may specifically effect them, the overall feeling seemed to be that the development was sympathetic with the surrounding environment and had the potential to be a positive addition to Chalford. Following feedback we reduced the density and addressed concerns on views and privacy of the neighbours.

Project Challenges

Steep Terrain & Site Constraints

The design embraced the natural land contours, using split-level homes and carefully positioned retaining walls to minimise site disturbance. Green roofs and permeable driveways manage water runoff.

Concerns on Density & Privacy

Community consultation allowed the design to evolve to maintains a sense of openness while still achieving gentle densification.

Access

A mix of direct plot access and shared driveways ensures safe vehicle movement while preserving the informal, rural character of the streetscape
