About this home:

A contemporary, low-energy home designed for clients with a love of travel and thoughtful design, set within the Long Four Acres development in South Norfolk. The house is organised around a sheltered southeast-facing courtyard, where louvred screens control sunlight and create shifting patterns of light and shadow. Inspired by Japanese, subtropical and mid-century architecture, the long, low form sits quietly in the landscape, with fluid internal spaces and strong connections to the outdoors. A restrained material palette and high-performance systems support a calm, efficient and comfortable home, closely rooted in its setting.

Planning Insights:

2 months at planning

This unique house forms one of the plots which was part of the Long Four Acres Custom/ Self Build development in Bracon Ash, South Norfolk. The site comprised 15no fully serviced plots, sold with outline permission and a Plot Passport for creation of distinctive and individual homes.

Project Challenges

Ensuring that the house did not overheat.

The design incorporates various solar shading solutions, including overhanging roofs and solar shading louvres.

Allowing for longevity and accessibility

All the main living spaces are on the ground floor, with wide doorways and accessible rooms. Space has been allowed within the plan for a future through-floor lift to access the first floor.

North facing Garden

The design of the house has been kept low and long, ensuring that the overshading of the north facing garden is minimal, even in winter.
